1st ODI India vs New Zealand: In 5 Points – The game that India dominated but blown away by Latham-Williamson show | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: India’s inadequacy with the bowl again came to the fore in the first ODI against New Zealand at Eden Park in Auckland on Friday. Having reduced the Kiwis to 88/3 in the 20th over, Tom Latham and Kane Williamson made a sensational comeback and cruised to a 307-run chase with 17 balls remaining.
Latham smashed a career-best 145 not out and forged a marathon unbeaten 221-run stand with skipper Williamson (94*), to help New Zealand register their 13th consecutive ODI win at home, their longest winning run in ODIs at home. This was only the second time New Zealand successfully chased down a 300+ target against India in ODIs. Their highest was 348 in Hamilton, 2020.
Here’s a look at the five key moments of the first ODI:
Top three clicked for India: The opening stand in any form of the game has been the concern for India for the longest time. But stand-in skipper Shikhar Dhawan and young Shubman Gill seemed to have this problem put to rest for now with their 124-run opening partnership as India batted first after losing the toss. Dhawan made 72 off 77 while Gill’s 50 came off 65 balls that helped India lay the platform for good total on the board. Shreyas Iyer also roared back to form as he top scored with an impressive 80 from 76 balls studded with four fours and as many sixes.
Late flourish: With Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav going back to the pavilion cheaply, India found themselves in spot of bother. But Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson led remarkable comeback with 94-run stand. Washington Sundar did the rest by providing the late flourish with an unbeaten 37 off 16 balls. Sundar belted three sixes and as many fours to propel India, who won the preceding T20 series between the sides, to 306/7 at Eden Park in Auckland.
Kiwi openers failed to capitalise: Chasing a huge target of 307, New Zealand openers Finn Allen (22) and Devon Conway (24) could not build on their good starts. Daryl Mitchell (11) also dismissed early that left the hosts struggling at 88/3 in 19.5 overs.
Latham-Williamson show: Everything seemed to be going in favour of India before Tom Latham joined Kane Williamson in the middle. Both players showed exemplary skills and produced a perfect example of how to build a partnership without breaking a sweat. At first Williamson was the senior partner and Latham played a second fiddle. But nearing the 40th over that hierarchy changed and Latham sprinted ahead of his captain. He struck 23 runs in the 40th over bowled by Shardul Thakur to go from 77 to a century – his seventh in one-day internationals – from 76 balls. They stayed together for the remainder of the match and steered the Kiwis to victory at 309/3 with 17 balls remaining.
Umran’s impressive debut: India’s Umran Malik (2-66) showed why he is seen as a potential star of the white ball game when he snatched two early wickets on debut to put New Zealand on the back foot. But Williamson and Latham combined to wear down the India bowlers who missed their lengths on a challenging ground.
