17 patients who underwent eye ops at SMS hosp contract bacterial infection; OT shut – ET HealthWorld
Jaipur: Seventeen patients who were operated upon for eye ailments at Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital between Monday and Wednesday have been found infected with pseudomonas bacteria. From Monday to Wednesday, 71 patients were operated on at the government-run hospital for eye problems. When they came for follow ups, they complained of redness in eyes, itching and blurred vision.
On Saturday, the hospital doctors consulted doctors of AIIMS, Delhi, for treatment of the patients. The hospital’s operation theatre, where the patients were operated upon, has been closed till July 3. SMS hospital teams are investigating the matter to find out the source of the infection. No such cases have been reported from other hospitals in the city.
“The source of infection is unknown in the operation theatre of ophthalmology, but it has been ascertained that the patients were infected with pseudomonas bacteria. Committees have been formed to find out the source of infection,” said Dr Achal Sharma, medical superintendent, SMS hospital.
SMS medical college principal Dr Rajeev Bagarhatta and Dr Sharma along with other hospital officials met the patients admitted to the hospital found infected with the bacteria.
“During rains, the risk of being infected with pseudomonas bacteria increases,” said Dr Sharma. He said that the doctors are taking help from AIIMS, Delhi.
The focus of the hospital is now on treatment of the patients to ensure that they recover soon. “Since it has been found that pseudomonas is the cause of infection, the drug which has the best response is being provided to the patients,” he said.
The hospital has stopped all the elective surgeries related to the eye at the OT till Monday. It has also taken samples for culture tests of medicines, equipment, and other items in the OT to rule out the possibility of them being infected with the bacteria.
